FOR A STRONGER HAWAI'I
A new, independent voice.
E Komo Mai
I am proud to announce my candidacy for State Senator, representing Hawaii's 10th Senate District (Kaimuki, Kapahulu, Palolo, Maunalani Heights, St. Louis Heights, Moʻiliʻili, Ala Wai). I aspire to serve my state and constituents with a new, independent voice on the issues that matter most to our ʻāina and diverse communities. Running as a nonpartisan candidate in a partisan race will be challenging, but it reflects the integrity I want to bring to the State Capitol.
I was born on Hawai’i’s ninth island with deep family roots in Oahu and Kona - my family has been in the islands for more than three generations. My late father, Randolph M. Shiraishi, was a graduate of Radford High School, Army veteran, proud alumni of UH Manoa and the John Burns School of Medicine, and a respected ER physician. My mother, Colleen Leners, is a decorated nurse practitioner, combat veteran, and Bronze Star recipient. It’s certainly a challenge to follow in such footsteps, but it is thanks to them and their sacrifices that I am able to dedicate my life to public service.
After high school, I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. I served 5 years on active duty travelling the world and spending most of that time in the Asia-Pacific region. I continue my military service to this day in the Marine Corps Reserves where I am currently a Staff Sergeant. After active duty, I studied political science and economics at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. I have long been passionate about civic participation and community service. My experience includes participating in the Citizens Police Academy with the Honolulu Police Department, interning at the Hawai'i State Judiciary, and volunteering with Honolulu Habitat for Humanity.
There are both chronic and emerging challenges to our state’s growth and prosperity. However, I believe with accountable leadership and smart policies, we can build and protect a sustainable Hawai’i that can be enjoyed for generations to come.
Mahalo and thank you for your support and engagement as citizens!
